WATER SUPPLY – Seawater desalination plant announced to supply 75,000 residents in Androy by January 2027

A new project for the South. The Refoundation authorities have signed a partnership agreement with a company named Aureate Resources to address the shortage of drinking water in the Androy region. The agreement aims to build a seawater desalination plant in Tsiarangoty, Ambovombe. According to information released by the Refoundation presidency, residents of Androy are expected to benefit from the first output by the end of January 2027.

According to a statement from the presidency, the company is scheduled to begin setting up in Tsiarangoty, 7km from Ambovombe, at the end of this month. The equipment required for the work will be installed in November to launch initial production in January. The project includes studies, construction, installation, testing, and commissioning of the infrastructure. It is expected to produce 1,500m3 of drinking water per day, potentially supplying nearly 75,000 residents of Ambovombe and the four surrounding districts.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Minosoa Anjaratiana Elia Razafindrianiaina, and Xiao Cheng, representative of the partner company, in the presence of the President of the Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina. The partnership aims to provide a sustainable response to the water scarcity that has affected the Androy region for several years. Access to drinking water is presented as a factor for improving public health, education, economic development, and the living conditions of the population.

During the signing ceremony, the President of the Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, stated that the lack of water remains one of the main obstacles to the development of the Androy region. He also indicated that the hydraulic infrastructure already built by the State, such as dams, water supply networks, boreholes, and catchment works, must be complemented by innovative solutions like seawater desalination.
