The United States plans to mobilize an additional $242 million to support the response to the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. This new funding brings the total direct aid provided by the U.S. Department of State to combat the epidemic to over $512 million, the U.S. administration announced on Wednesday.
According to the Department of State, this funding, which is to be implemented in collaboration with Congress, will be used to strengthen Ebola response and preparedness actions, as well as humanitarian aid related to the epidemic. It is part of the commitment made by Washington during the G7 summit in June to dedicate up to $500 million in additional funds to this health crisis.
The funds will be used specifically to finance case surveillance and detection, patient isolation and treatment, health screening at borders and points of entry, the strengthening of health centers in affected areas, and awareness campaigns aimed at combating misinformation and building public trust in health interventions.
The Department of State indicates that previously mobilized funds have enabled 8.6 million health screenings in affected or at-risk countries, the dissemination of prevention messages to over one million people, support for more than 180 health facilities in affected areas, and the operation of 12 specialized centers in the DRC for the isolation and treatment of patients.
U.S. funding has also enabled the acquisition and distribution of nearly 300 tons of essential materials, including personal protective equipment and supplies for water, sanitation, hygiene, and infection prevention. They have also contributed to strengthening the diagnostic capabilities of 11 operational laboratories in the region.
Washington also noted that it has dedicated $350 million in humanitarian aid to the DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda. This contribution is part of a global package of $1.8 billion announced in May for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The Department of State emphasizes that the United States remains the leading financial contributor to the Ebola response and calls on other donors to increase their support to limit the spread of the virus.
