The 2026 edition of the International Fair of Rural Economy of Madagascar (Fier Mada) has taken on a stronger international dimension. The event, which opened on Wednesday at the Makis Andohatapenaka stadium, expects to welcome several delegations of foreign buyers. They are on the Great Island to scout local Malagasy products, providing new market opportunities for local producers.
According to the organizer and founder of Fier Mada, Jacques Ramanantsoa, buyers from Reunion Island were expected on the very first day. On Thursday afternoon, South African economic operators visited the site, followed by a Belgian delegation on Friday. A second group of South African buyers is also scheduled for Sunday, the final day of the fair.
This international presence confirms the growing appeal of the event. “French buyers, who are loyal to the event, even charter special flights to attend, because products from all 24 regions of Madagascar are represented here without them having to travel across the country,” added Jacques Ramanantsoa.
Some 350 stands are set up this year, showcasing products from agriculture, livestock, fishing, and agri-food, as well as home goods, decoration, cosmetics, and hair care. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Gaëtan Ramindo, acknowledged that Fier Mada remains a showcase that allows farmers to demonstrate their expertise.
This 27th edition is held under the theme “Sustainable roads to connect all rural production zones to municipal markets.” This choice reflects the concerns of producers who face difficulties in transporting their harvests. For the organizers, developing sustainable road infrastructure remains an essential condition for enabling farmers to access markets, including for export.
