A production gap of 25MW occurred on the Antananarivo interconnected grid on Monday evening. Jirama was forced to implement rotating power cuts in many neighborhoods of the capital and its surrounding areas between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM on Monday. The company cited a technical failure on the first Combustion Turbine (TAC1) at the Ambohimanambola power plant and another malfunction on the GR1 unit at Mandraka. The national water and electricity company noted that these two incidents reduced the available electricity production capacity on the grid, forcing it to resort to load shedding.
According to Jirama, given the production gap, the cuts were unavoidable during peak evening consumption hours. Each interruption was expected to last approximately one hour within the announced timeframe. However, no rotating power cuts are scheduled for this Tuesday. Jirama stated that its technical teams have been dispatched to the production sites to repair the affected facilities and restore electricity production and distribution in Antananarivo and its surroundings as quickly as possible.
