A new distinction for Madagascar. Following the electoral process organized in July 2026 by the Foundation for Democracy Innovation, two young Malagasy, Espérance Amponga and Monja Tsirokay, were elected to represent the entire Indian Ocean region within the Pan-African Youth Parliament for Democracy. Their mandate is for two years, starting from August 3, 2026.
Espérance Amponga and Monja Tsirokay will not only sit on behalf of Madagascar. They will represent the entire Indian Ocean region within this new pan-African body dedicated to promoting participatory democracy.
The Pan-African Youth Parliament for Democracy aims to be a space for dialogue, reflection, deliberation, and co-construction of policies related to democratic governance in Africa. It brings together young leaders from different countries on the continent to promote a more inclusive democracy, in which youth fully participate in public decisions.
The official inauguration of this first edition is being held in Accra, Ghana, from August 3 to 5, 2026, under the theme “A democracy that relies on the energy of youth.” Organized by the Foundation for Democracy Innovation, in partnership with the National Youth Authority of Ghana and Parliamentary Network Africa, this meeting brings together young leaders from across Africa and its diasporas.
According to Espérance Amponga, alongside their continental mandate, the two representatives are also carrying a regional project aimed at establishing the governance of the Pan-African Youth Parliament for Democracy in the Indian Ocean. “Madagascar has been proposed to host the regional headquarters. This structure will have the mission of coordinating activities in the region, ensuring the monitoring of actions, producing reports, and promoting participatory democracy in the Indian Ocean states. A structured project has already been developed and will be submitted to the Foundation for Democracy Innovation for implementation,” he explains.
This election constitutes recognition for Madagascar. Two of its young leaders will now have the responsibility of carrying the voice of the Indian Ocean youth and contributing to reflections on the future of democracy in Africa.
