Shocking images paired with key messages were displayed by medical teams and awareness agents at the University of Antananarivo during a two-day free Mpox awareness and vaccination campaign held on July 30 and 31. The information captured the attention of students, administrative and technical staff, as well as faculty members. Thousands were reached by the campaign, with hundreds receiving vaccinations and participating in health surveys.
According to Dr. Paubert Tsivahiny, Director of the Expanded Program on Immunization at the Ministry of Public Health, 3,800 people were sensitized, and 206 were vaccinated against Mpox at the Ankatso campus. Additionally, 200 individuals were surveyed regarding their knowledge of the disease and necessary preventive behaviors. Visual aids illustrating the symptoms of the disease and essential facts about Mpox drew significant interest. Participants engaged in Q&A sessions, which helped address concerns and dispel myths surrounding the disease, which is still often subject to misinformation.
The campaign aimed to strengthen Mpox prevention within the university community, which is considered particularly vulnerable due to communal living, especially in university dormitories. The two-day event emphasized that preventing the epidemic relies primarily on understanding transmission modes, symptoms, and protective measures. Free vaccination serves as an additional tool to reduce the risk of virus spread within the community.
This initiative was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Public Health, through its affiliated departments and agencies, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the University of Antananarivo, and various technical and financial partners.
