In the capital and the Vakinankaratra region, suspected kidnapping cases have escalated into lynchings, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
Among dozens of people wrongly accused of being child abductors and attacked by mobs, two have lost their lives. One was beaten to death on July 9 in Tsaramasay, and the other was killed the day before yesterday at the Dango market in Faratsiho.
The latter victim, a man in his thirties suffering from mental health issues, was burned alive after being suspected of attempting to kidnap a 6-year-old child. His family and the local security committee confirmed he was not a kidnapper. Local officials, including District Chief Alberthine Ravololotinarisoa, Deputy Nomenjanahary Ramilison, and Mayor Valohery Mampionona, condemned this vigilante justice, emphasizing that taking a life is a crime.
These collective acts of violence follow a series of incidents triggered by kidnapping rumors. In Antsirabe, a crying child accompanied by his sister was mistaken for a victim. A mob gathered in front of the Ambohimena police station, ready to lynch the sister, until their mother arrived to confirm the child was her daughter, ending the confusion.
Divisional Police Commissioner Talily Damy, Regional Director of Public Security for Vakinankaratra, explained that many reports of attempted kidnappings turned out to be misunderstandings or involved individuals with mental health issues. He also noted cases of staged kidnappings, where individuals faked their own abduction to extort money from relatives.
The National Police reaffirmed that only the judicial system has the authority to pass judgment and warned that spreading false information on social media can have tragic consequences.
