Unlike UEFA and Concacaf, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has so far preferred not to take a position on FIFA’s project to privatize the global governing body and the World Cup.
Africa is hesitant to take a stance based on its own interests, while other confederations have quickly expressed their positions. As part of the FIFA Forward Enterprise project, FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed on Tuesday to sell shares of FIFA and the World Cup to private investors.
CAF is encouraging its member associations to study this proposal. It has also invited them to examine the project of creating a commercial company open to private investment and to participate in the consultation process launched by FIFA. The stated objective is to increase financial resources.
Madagascar, for its part, prefers to wait for CAF’s decision. If the project comes to fruition, each of the 211 member federations could receive an exceptional grant of 20 million dollars, a particularly attractive prospect for developing countries. This would be an opportunity to boost the development of football on a global scale. CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe will convene the executive committee next week to examine and evaluate this initiative.
The project involves creating a company, in collaboration with FIFA Forward Enterprise, to manage commercial activities, broadcasting rights, sponsorship, and ticketing. Gianni Infantino has set September 19 as the deadline for national federations to respond. If 50% of them are in favor, FIFA leaders will submit the creation and sale of this commercial subsidiary to a vote by the Council.
Given the relationship between the FIFA president and the CAF president, Patrice Motsepe has not openly opposed this initiative. Moreover, the African body has not yet adopted an official position.
In contrast, UEFA and the South American Confederation clearly expressed their opposition following their members’ meeting on Thursday. The 55 UEFA federations unanimously decided to boycott FIFA competitions. The 41 Concacaf federations also expressed their concerns.
