July is proving less cool than usual, or at least warmer than July 2025, in the Central Highlands, particularly in Antananarivo. Temperatures are expected to remain relatively high in the capital over the coming days, despite it being the winter season. According to the General Directorate of Meteorology, this situation is due to a cloud front stationed south of Madagascar, which is blocking the trade winds—the dominant winter winds—and altering weather conditions across part of the island.
For this Friday, forecasts predict morning fog that will give way to a mix of clouds and sunny spells in the capital. Temperatures are expected to fluctuate between 12 and 25°C. During the same period in 2025, temperatures ranged between 10 and 18°C, with cool weather reported throughout the day.
According to Zo Rakotomanana, a forecaster at the General Directorate of Meteorology, the cloud front is promoting rainfall in southern Madagascar while preventing trade winds from circulating normally. “This phenomenon leads to unstable weather conditions, giving the impression of an inter-seasonal period rather than winter,” he explained.
However, the forecaster noted that the observed temperatures remain relatively close to seasonal norms, where maximums generally hover around 18°C at the end of July. According to the General Directorate of Meteorology’s forecasts, this pattern is expected to persist until the beginning of August. Mornings will continue to be marked by fog before giving way to sunnier weather during the day.
