BASKETBALL 5×5 – U18 AFROBASKET QUALIFIERS – The Ankoay march towards Abidjan

After two landslide victories against Namibia and an 88-44 success against Zimbabwe, the young Ankoay must negotiate their final match to formalize their presence in Abidjan.

The mission is almost accomplished for the young Ankoay. Madagascar has built significant confidence in this qualifying campaign by dominating its opponents. After outclassing Namibia in the first leg with a score of 115-31, the Malagasy selection repeated the feat in the return leg, with another show of force ending 111-33.

Before thinking about Abidjan, the young Ankoay must overcome one last obstacle: Zimbabwe, the host country of this qualifying campaign. A team that the Ankoay already dominated on July 27, winning 88-44. This comfortable lead puts Madagascar in an ideal position before tonight’s final confrontation.

In theory, the young Ankoay have already secured their spot in Abidjan. To hope to overturn the situation and overtake Madagascar, the Zimbabweans would need to overcome a 44-point deficit—a mission that seems particularly difficult given the current momentum of both teams.

However, caution remains necessary. The Malagasy staff must keep their players focused until the final whistle. The goal is clear: finish this qualifying campaign with another victory and officially secure the ticket to Abidjan.

For Solofohery Angelot Razafiarivony, National Technical Director (DTN) of the Malagasy Basketball Federation, qualification is now within reach. “The victory in the first match against Zimbabwe has significantly strengthened Madagascar’s chances. It is now up to the young Ankoay to seize this opportunity,” he stated.

The July 30 match is of particular importance. A new victory would allow the young Ankoay to validate an almost perfect campaign and confirm their rising power, aiming for the U18 Afrobasket 2026.
