During an official visit to Egypt, the Malagasy Head of State is seeking political support to shift the stance of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC). This issue was discussed during his meeting with his Egyptian counterpart yesterday.
Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, the Malagasy leader, described his trip to Egypt as historic, highlighted by his meeting with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the El Alamein Palace in Cairo. This marks the first official visit by a Malagasy head of state to Egypt since bilateral relations began in 1970.
Beyond strengthening bilateral ties, the primary objective is to secure an ally to bolster Madagascar’s lobbying efforts within the AU’s Peace and Security Council. Following the military’s rise to power on October 14, 2025, the PSC suspended Madagascar from all AU activities, labeling the event an “unconstitutional change of government.”
President al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Madagascar’s transition and the “Refoundation” process. Colonel Randrianirina drew parallels between Madagascar’s current path and Egypt’s 2013 political transition, hoping that Egypt’s diplomatic influence will help facilitate Madagascar’s rehabilitation within the continental organization.
The Malagasy administration is eager to resolve its suspension, as the 24-month transition timeline remains the key condition for the country’s return to the AU’s decision-making bodies.
