Simplified procedures are coming for those wishing to renew their passports. Authorities have announced the launch of a platform allowing online enrollment for individuals who already hold a passport and wish to renew it in the coming weeks. They also announced the extension of the travel document’s validity to ten years, except for children.
“The corresponding decree will be adopted within two Council of Ministers meetings,” announced the Minister of Digital Development, Posts and Telecommunications, Mahefa Andriamampiadana, on Tuesday evening during a meeting between the presidential delegation and the Malagasy diaspora in Egypt.
As clarified by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alice Ndiaye, online enrollment is exclusively reserved for those who already possess a passport. “Those applying for a passport for the first time must visit an embassy for fingerprinting,” she stated to members of the diaspora. Visiting immigration and emigration services is also mandatory for first-time applicants residing in Madagascar, whether in the provinces or the capital.
Beyond online renewal, the upcoming decree is expected to extend the passport validity period to ten years for adults who request it. While the duration will remain at five years for young children who “are still likely to change their appearance,” as noted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the choice is open for adults. They can opt for a validity period of five or ten years, Minister Mahefa Andriamampiadana confided. The difference will be in the fees, he told 2424.mg. According to him, holders of valid passports can request an extension of their validity period to ten years, or choose between a five or ten-year validity period.
