The Criminal Brigade has opened an investigation following the death of a young girl in Akamasoa. Her father is suspected of beating her to death with a broom handle.
A 26-year-old man has been placed in police custody at the Anosy Criminal Brigade, suspected of fatally beating his 8-year-old daughter on Sunday, July 26, in Akamasoa, within the commune of Ambohimangakely.
Around 3:10 PM, children witnessed him violently striking the girl with a broom handle, claiming she had lost a 5,000 ariary banknote. The girl lost consciousness and was transported to a dispensary, where she passed away shortly after. A forensic examination at the Ambohimangakely District Referral Hospital (CHRD) revealed a fractured cervical spine and severe injuries, according to initial investigation findings.
The victim lived with her father, as her mother is currently incarcerated at the Antanimora central prison for an unrelated case. Investigations suggest the man was not a resident of Akamasoa and was intoxicated at the time of the incident. The lost money appears to have been a mere pretext.
Investigators also suspect the father of having repeatedly abused his daughter in the past. They are currently determining if the child had intended to confide in her grandmother. A neighbor recounted the tragic scene, describing the father’s brutal assault on the child. Following the incident, an angry crowd gathered outside the police station, requiring the intervention of Father Pedro, the founder of the Akamasoa community, to restore calm.
