A rise in water levels has been observed in the river that powers the Andekaleka hydroelectric plant. While Jirama did not disclose the specific current water level, it confirmed that the cloud seeding operation conducted on Monday has improved the plant’s production. Although the operation did not trigger a major storm in the watershed, the light rain that fell had a positive impact.
Further operations are planned as soon as weather conditions permit. According to the national water and electricity company, the goal is to enable the hydroelectric plant to operate at maximum capacity during this low-water season.
In parallel with the cloud seeding, Jirama is mobilizing all thermal power plants connected to the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA), including the 18 MW TAC3 combustion turbine in Ambohimanambola, to compensate for the decline in hydroelectric production. The state-owned company also stated that it has secured the necessary funding to ensure the operation of fuel-powered thermal plants.
According to Jirama’s Director General, General Hajatiana Rasolomanana, the company has sufficient production capacity to meet demand during the 2026 low-water season, a situation he considers better managed than last year. He noted that forecasts from June indicate that the production deficit on the RIA is expected to be reduced to 19.9 MW in August, compared to 30.67 MW during the same period in 2025.
Furthermore, the Director of the Antananarivo Interconnected Network, Solofonantenaina Rakotonandraina, assured that the power outages observed in recent days do not signal a return to load shedding. “Currently, our available power is sufficient to meet demand. Any outages that may occur are primarily due to isolated technical incidents on the facilities. However, as of the end of July, and we hope this continues through August, our capacity remains sufficient,” he stated.
