Communities living near protected areas are benefiting more from funding due to their conservation efforts. The State has recently received the second tranche of carbon credits, resulting from efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The first payment was made in 2023.
According to Lovakanto Ravelomanana, coordinator of the National Bureau for Climate Change and REDD+ (BNCCREDD+), the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Economy and Finance are currently collaborating to transfer these funds to the beneficiaries.
The first revenue from these carbon credits amounted to 39,563,903,942.13 Ariary. 20% of this sum is allocated to management and monitoring activities, while the remaining 80% is entirely dedicated to conservation and local development actions. The portion reserved for the 119 beneficiary communes has already been disbursed. It allows for the financing of development projects that meet the needs expressed by each commune and defined in consultation with local populations. The Ministries of Environment and Sustainable Development, Economy and Finance, and Interior and Decentralization are jointly ensuring the monitoring and management of these funds.
Lovakanto Ravelomanana reminds that the funding received by Madagascar depends directly on the preservation of its forests. When deforestation increases, the country risks losing this international funding.
