A new opportunity has been offered to households that occupied the Port Sec III site in Tsarakofafa, Toamasina. The one-stop shop responsible for receiving applications will reopen starting this Monday, announced Heritiana Anicet Randriambahoaka, Director General of the Port of Toamasina Autonomous Management Company (SPAT). Households that have not yet submitted their applications for relocation assistance can now do so. This decision follows the difficulties faced by many families who became homeless after their homes were demolished on the land designated for the future Toamasina Multimodal Logistics and Port Platform (PMLPT).
More than 270 households are affected by this relocation operation to the Port Sec II site. The application period originally ended in June, and development work began last week. According to SPAT, about a hundred families submitted their applications on time. They will each receive a 250 m² plot of land. The allocation deeds will be signed starting next Wednesday, according to the SPAT Director General.
Despite a 2025 court ruling authorizing the clearance of the site, several families were still occupying the premises at the time of the demolition operations. “Several measures had already been taken. However, some people did not comply with the deadlines, which led to the current situation,” said the SPAT Director General.
The port authority affirms its continued commitment to all those affected by the project. As a temporary measure, a fallback site has been set up at Port Sec II since Friday to temporarily accommodate homeless families, and food supplies are being distributed. SPAT is also planning temporary hotel accommodation for families with young children and providing trucks to transport their belongings.
“SPAT’s commitment remains unchanged. Everyone affected by this project, including those who were illegally occupying the land, will receive a 250 m² plot free of charge,” the official assured.
Finally, Heritiana Anicet Randriambahoaka called on all stakeholders to show solidarity and cooperate in the realization of this project. He emphasized that the Toamasina Multimodal Logistics and Port Platform is a strategic infrastructure for the economic development of both the economic capital and Madagascar as a whole.
