The sixth edition of the Yavarhoussen-Inha Grant has distinguished three joint winners from sixteen international applications dedicated to the art history and heritage of Madagascar. After two hours of deliberation, the jury exceptionally selected three winners: Ndranto Jacob Ranarivelo, Armelle Malvoisin, and Julie Rateau-Holbach. The sixteen applications received, a record since the grant’s inception, came from the United States, Canada, Cameroon, Madagascar, and France.
Ndranto Jacob Ranarivelo, a Master 1 History student at the University of Antananarivo, will focus his research on Malagasy caricature, from the nationalist press of the 1940s-1950s to the forms of satire shared on social media, examining its role in collective memory and public debate.
Armelle Malvoisin, a former art journalist and Master’s student in art history at the University of Rennes 2, will study the artist Victoire Ravelonanosy (1910-1981). Using archives preserved in France, Madagascar, and Tunisia, she will analyze the artist’s aesthetics and her contribution to the emancipation of Malagasy women artists.
Julie Rateau-Holbach, a PhD in art history, will focus on the Malagasy artisans and artists present at the colonial exhibitions in Marseille in 1906 and 1922. Her work will rely on French and Malagasy archives to establish an unprecedented directory and better understand the artistic exchanges between Madagascar and France at the beginning of the 20th century.
Created in 2021 by the Yavarhoussen Fund in partnership with the INHA, the grant, endowed with 17,000 euros, funds fieldwork, archival research, and meetings with specialists. At the end of their research year, the winners will submit a scientific article, the results of which will be presented during a study day at the INHA, scheduled for late January 2027.
