The Madagascar Protected Areas and Biodiversity Foundation (FAPBM) has awarded reporting grants to the four winners of the 3rd edition of the ‘Media for Protected Areas’ competition. The winners—Philiberte Amiko and Philippine Rasoafara in the radio category, Ando Randrianarimanana in the print media category, and Aina Rabetany in the television category—produced reports highlighting conservation challenges and their direct impacts on local populations.
“The FAPBM seeks funds to finance nature conservation. (…) The real danger lies in our ignorance of the value of our biodiversity, not in the lack of money. Environmental protection is not just a matter of laws or technicians; it also requires journalists to bridge the gap with the population. We only protect and love what we know,” stated Dr. Rija Ranaivoarison, Executive Director of FAPBM, emphasizing that this competition is an investment in the future.
These reports highlight the concrete results of FAPBM’s actions on the ground: in Anketrevo, the dissemination of new rice-growing techniques has boosted yields while reducing pressure on forests; in Andringitra, the living standards of residents have significantly improved; and in Beheloke, women are becoming more involved in the family economy and the development of their community.
“It is humans who need nature, but nature does not need humans,” emphasized Kiady Rakotondravoninala, Director General of Governance and Environment at the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
