A difficult end to the tournament for the Malagasy women’s national tennis team. After being defeated 2-1 by Algeria and then by the same score against Zimbabwe during the classification matches held this weekend in Gaborone, Botswana, Madagascar finished the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III in sixth place. However, the Great Island retains its spot in Africa Group III.
The four Malagasy representatives, Harena Voaviandraina, Iariniaina Tsantaniony, Mirindra Razafinarivo, and Elisoa Andriantefihasina, led by captain Teddy Andrianjafitrimo, started their tournament well with two victories against Namibia and Burundi. However, their 3-0 loss to Nigeria, the group favorite, deprived them of the promotion phase to Group II and sent them to play the classification matches.
According to the Malagasy Tennis Federation, this participation remains an important step in the development of women’s tennis in Madagascar. The experience gained in Gaborone should serve as a foundation for preparing for future events and allow the team to aim higher in 2027, the Federation believes.
