EVENT – Zay keeps Nary’s legacy alive

Nary’s music continues to resonate. Despite the passing of the man who left his mark on the history of the group Zay during the Covid-19 period, the members assure that his musical style has been passed on to them and continues to live through them. In this spirit, the group will launch the festivities marking its 30th anniversary on stage during a major concert organized by SR Event on July 26 at the Palais des Sports de Mahamasina. Already sold out, the show has generated such enthusiasm that a special area, dubbed ‘Passy Hihaona’, has been set up to meet the high demand from fans.

This evening will mark the beginning of a celebration that will last for an entire year. Centered on the themes of emotion and nostalgia, the concert will be divided into three parts and will offer several surprises to the public, beyond the traditional guest artists. Sound engineering will be provided by Ivenco. For this anniversary, the group has chosen to offer a true ‘best of’. ‘We had a lot of trouble selecting the songs, because we wanted to perform them all, as each one carries a particular emotion,’ confides Malala.

Created thirty years ago, the group has seen several lineups. Among the founders, three members are still present today. After the passing of Nantenaina in 2001, the group had to face a new ordeal with the death of Nary, and then that of Micka. Today, the Zay group has six members: Malala, Haingo, Mamy, and Miora, while Tovo joined the formation a few years after its creation. Artie joined the team in 2018. Throughout its journey, Zay has released seven albums, as well as several singles that became popular without appearing on an album.

For Malala, Nary’s passing left a huge void, but his legacy remains intact. ‘The group really felt a great void because we lost our leader. No one will replace Nary. But what he passed on to us has remained alive. His musical style has been transmitted and it will not change,’ she says.
