Tensions are rising over electricity production. Faced with persistent power outages in Toamasina, Antsiranana, and Mahajanga, the Head of State is taking a firm stance.
One week. That is the deadline set by Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, the Head of State, in an ultimatum issued yesterday against the company Enelec. The company, which partners with Jirama, has one week to resolve electricity production issues in the cities of Toamasina, Antsiranana, and Mahajanga.
The declaration was made by the senior officer on the sidelines of an event at the Iavoloha State Palace. “I am issuing a warning to Enelec… if they do not want to work in Madagascar, they should leave. This is a final warning for Enelec. I am giving them a few days this week; if the situation in Antsiranana, Toamasina, and Mahajanga is not restored, they will see,” he stated firmly.
While the Head of State did not specify what measures he intends to take, his comments follow concerns over the persistence of power cuts. Despite his announcement on July 11 that load shedding would cease by July 13, outages continue. The President suggests that Enelec bears responsibility, noting that whenever the state provides additional generators to Jirama, Enelec appears to decrease its own production.
The President also criticized the contract between Jirama and Enelec, specifically a clause requiring Jirama to pay 65% of the contract value regardless of performance. He cited the example of Antsiranana, where Enelec is contracted to produce 18 megawatts but is currently only producing 3 megawatts.
In response, Enelec issued a statement late at night, citing “major and unprecedented technical problems” affecting their power plants. The company stated that its staff is working day and night to resolve these issues in collaboration with Jirama, while acknowledging the concerns expressed by the President.
