Labour’s Andy Burnham was officially appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday, aiming to bring a change in both style and policy to Downing Street as the country faces major economic and social challenges.
At 56, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester succeeds Keir Starmer, who resigned after taking office in July 2024 following a landslide Labour victory that ended 14 years of Conservative rule.
Andy Burnham, who became Labour leader on Friday with the support of approximately 95% of Labour MPs, is the sixth Prime Minister to enter Downing Street in ten years. He was officially tasked by King Charles III to form a new government during an audience at Buckingham Palace.
Burnham intends to outline his priorities, focusing on restoring trust in government and providing relief to Britons facing the cost-of-living crisis. Keir Starmer, who had become unpopular and faced internal party criticism, officially resigned on Monday, stating he was proud of his accomplishments.
The new government is expected to be announced shortly. Burnham, often called the “King of the North,” faces significant hurdles, including sluggish economic growth and high public debt. He is also tasked with countering the rise of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
Known for his relaxed style and perceived as slightly more left-leaning than his predecessor, Burnham has promised to govern “differently.” However, Conservative opposition leader Kemi Badenoch has criticized him, suggesting he avoids difficult decisions.
