Malagasy music has lost one of its greatest icons. Singer and composer Ramy Franck, whose real name was François de Sales Rakotomanana, died this Saturday, July 18, at the age of 86. His body is currently resting in Ambatokaranana, and his burial is scheduled for July 22 in Ambohitsararay, Ankadinandriana.
Ramy Franck will forever be associated with “Vavaka ho anao ry Neny,” one of the most iconic songs in Malagasy variety music. Recorded in 1972 with the group Melodie Jazz under the Discomad label, this track has transcended generations and continues to accompany Mother’s Day celebrations and numerous family gatherings every year.
Beyond this timeless success, the artist deeply influenced the music scene of the 1970s with an original style blending psychedelic rock, pop-rock, and Malagasy jazz fusion. His musical universe contributed to modernizing Malagasy music while influencing many other artists.
Following the announcement of his passing, several figures from the artistic world paid tribute to him. Among them, Rossy posted an emotional message, recalling the place the singer held in his youth: “A monument has fallen… For me, he was one of those exceptional artists. His songs lulled my childhood. ‘Bibidia’ resonated in Antanimbarinandriana… As for ‘Vavaka ho anao ry Neny,’ this song is poignant for orphans, but it also pays tribute to all those mothers who raised children. I bow before his works, which will remain eternal.” He also extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
Rossy also recalled that Ramy Franck knew how to pass on his passion to the next generation, praising his son, a percussionist, whom he considers a worthy heir to this artistic legacy.
With the passing of Ramy Franck, Madagascar loses an artist whose works continue to live on in the collective memory. His songs, carried by a unique musical identity and timeless sensitivity, remain a precious heritage that will continue to inspire future generations.
