Madagascar will be absent from the U15 and U19 African Youth Championships. The continental summit is set to take place in Accra, Uganda.
Following the judo delegation, it is now the turn of table tennis. The players from the Great Island will not receive state subsidies to travel and participate in the upcoming African youth summit, which was scheduled to kick off early next week. Yet, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa had already listed Madagascar among the twenty-three countries committed to competing in the continental event.
The country’s flag bearers in almost all disciplines often face these financial constraints, especially in recent times, despite the efforts and sacrifices they have made, sometimes setting aside their studies or work. The U15 African Youth Championship will run from July 20 to 27, and the U19 African Junior Cup from July 28 to 29 in Accra, the Ugandan capital.
The athletes selected following the evaluation and ranking test held in June had begun the final stretch of their preparation at the beginning of July. The players feel frustrated, preparing in uncertainty about whether they will be able to travel on the eve of every international outing.
The U19 boys’ selection includes former national A-series champion and reigning junior champion Riva Rakotoarisoa (Challengers club), who was one of the Malagasy representatives at the World Team Championships in London, alongside Rhandy (CJST Toamasina) and three players from Young Vibes: Tafita, Hary, and Dorian. Multiple national senior and youth champion Océane Rakotondrazaka (Challengers) leads the U19 girls’ list, accompanied by Fitiavako (CJST), Gracia (Challengers), Jenny (Cosfa), and Alexia (Young Vibes). In the U15 boys’ category, notable names include David (Young Vibes), Elie (CJST), Rivaldo (Young Vibes), and Josh (Challengers). Five girls were selected: Mbolatiana (CFTT), Idealy (CFTT Toamasina), Mayane (Challengers), Romantica (Young Vibes), and Massy (CJST). The Great Island had been present at previous editions.
