In Toamasina, reality has quickly caught up with promises. Despite the end of load shedding promised for yesterday in this port city, several neighborhoods continue to suffer from power cuts that have become unbearable for residents. “Yesterday, in our neighborhood, the power was cut from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., then from 9 p.m. to past 10 p.m. This morning, the outage has already lasted for an hour,” a resident of the city said yesterday. Others testify that the power was cut at least seven times during the day on Monday.
Filatex Energy, a partner of Jirama in the supply of electricity in Toamasina, admits that this electricity supply has not yet been fully restored. “The Toamasina IV power plant is currently going through a difficult period, as this unit is not yet fully operational, and our technicians are working to solve the problem,” says Tahina Ramaromandray, Director of Public Relations for the Filatex Group. There was reportedly a “small incident” during the repair work. “There is an engine that we really hoped to see start on Saturday evening, but it is still not working. This file is one of our absolute priorities for this week,” he added.
The authorities visited the site yesterday to observe the progress of the work, in particular the restarting of unit No. 11, which has a capacity of 18 MW. In parallel, another team is working on unit No. 10. “We are doing everything possible to ensure it is finalized by the end of July in order to add 4 MW to the grid. Furthermore, unit No. 8 is also under repair; its return to service is scheduled for August 15,” explains Tahina Ramaromandray.
In addition to unit No. 8 expected for mid-August, Filatex Energy has acquired a brand-new generator, which arrived last Friday at the port of Toamasina. Its installation is underway and will significantly increase the energy production capacity in the city. “Thanks to all these efforts, our goal is to stabilize the situation by the end of July, when these additional engines will strengthen electricity production,” concludes Tahina Ramaromandray.
