The iron reinforcement inside the concrete markers along the new Ankiembe embankment has been stripped. Over a stretch of about one hundred meters, starting from the Ankiembe landing stage towards the airport, the concrete markers have been damaged. Four or five markers are damaged over a length of about twelve meters, followed by three or four that were left untouched by vandals, and then the subsequent markers are stripped, and so on. On some markers, the iron was not removed, but they appear to have been deliberately destroyed.
The thieves seem to have chosen a location with little traffic from fishermen, boatmen, or nearby residences. It was morning joggers, many of whom use this new embankment for exercise, who alerted the public to the deliberate destruction of the infrastructure on social media. The boulevard is five kilometers long and connects the port of Toliara to the RN7 at the Toliara airport, while protecting the coastal neighborhoods of Ankiembe and Motombe. It was inaugurated in May of last year.
The construction of the expressway was financed by the European Investment Bank. The road also serves as a bypass to relieve traffic congestion in the city, particularly for heavy vehicles.
