URBAN SANITATION – Andravoahangy streets cleared

The Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) is continuing its fight against urban disorder. The Andravoahangy district has been the subject of a large-scale sanitation and reorganization operation.

A major cleanup has taken place in Andravoahangy, leading to a transformation of the neighborhood. The “Mascar” sector, the area’s main trouble spot, underwent a reorganization operation aimed at freeing up sidewalks for pedestrians and improving traffic flow.

Municipal authorities removed cars, motorcycles, motorcycle taxis, and carts that were blocking the sidewalks. Prolonged parking of buses at stops is also strictly prohibited to ensure rapid vehicle turnover. At the same time, the adjacent taxi stand has been restructured to prevent spillover onto the roadway.

Furthermore, informal vendors obstructing bus stops and roads were cleared. The operation extended beyond the roadsides; within the Andravoahangy market, traders were ordered to clean their stalls and dismantle all structures and extensions built illegally within the market premises.

A Marathon Task

These measures are considered the first step of a broader plan to reorganize traffic in this district.

“We plan to launch a new system on this axis, prioritizing the restructuring of stop zones,” stated Commissioner Brice Andrianina Ratsimba, Director of Transport and Urban Mobility (DTMU) at the CUA.

The CUA is embarking on a true marathon to reorganize traffic in Antananarivo. The Andravoahangy project follows recent improvements in Ivandry and Ambodivona, as well as Ankadimbahoaka, which served as a pilot zone a few days ago. While local residents welcome the initiative, they remain skeptical about its long-term sustainability. “The effort is commendable, but the question of durability remains. A one-day crackdown is not enough,” remarked motorist Donald Ramarokoto, adding, “In Ambodivona, for example, old habits have already returned. Two-wheelers and vendors are squatting on the roads again. It is time to implement measures that last.”

The municipality indicated that rigorous monitoring and follow-up of these new provisions will continue throughout the capital. “The real goal is to change behaviors and break the old habits of citizens,” the DTMU director added.
