Checks on vehicles with tinted windows are being stepped up in Antananarivo. Motorists were subjected to verifications conducted by law enforcement yesterday.
In Ambohibao Bongatsara, a car with tinted windows lowered its windows as it approached a checkpoint yesterday morning. Like this driver, numerous motorists were subjected to checks carried out by law enforcement, deployed across several strategic axes in Antananarivo.
As part of operations to prevent kidnappings and locate perpetrators of offenses, the Ambohidratrimo Gendarmerie Company, under the Analamanga Gendarmerie Group, conducted a road control operation yesterday.
In addition to routine checks, the gendarmes paid particular attention to vehicles equipped with tinted windows. The inspections were carried out indiscriminately, regardless of the vehicle type or the owner’s identity.
“In total, thirty vehicles were inspected. Among them, twenty-five were in order and possessed the necessary authorizations to drive with tinted windows. Three drivers agreed to immediately remove the tinting films from their windows to comply with regulations. Conversely, two vehicles were fined for non-compliance with existing provisions,” stated a press release from the National Police.
Authorities indicated that these control operations will continue in the coming days to enhance security and combat crime. “The goal is to enforce regulations, reassure the public, and strengthen the fight against crime in a context marked by an upsurge in insecurity,” explained a source from the National Police.
Well received
On site, reactions from motorists were mixed. “My windows are tinted. However, I understand these checks if they help improve security. If regularization is necessary, I am ready to go through the procedures,” confessed a driver checked in Ambohibao.
Among the general public, these operations have been well received. “We have been hearing a lot about kidnappings and assaults lately. Seeing law enforcement on the ground reassures us,” testified Rasoatiana, a merchant located near a checkpoint.
“Vehicles with very dark tinted windows often arouse suspicion because you cannot see who is inside. If these checks can discourage criminals, we support them,” she added.
These operations follow new measures announced by authorities to address recent cases of child kidnappings and homicides. From now on, all vehicles, including those of authorities, can be inspected. Owners of vehicles with unauthorized tinted windows are also urged to remove them or regularize their situation.
“If no offense is noted and the driver does not present anything suspicious, law enforcement invites them to bring their vehicle into compliance with regulations. Two options are then offered: obtain official authorization for tinted windows or replace them with windows that meet current standards,” indicated a police officer on the ground.
These measures primarily aim to strengthen the protection of road users, enforce legislation, and make the fight against crime more effective in the current security context.
