PÉTANQUE – MONDIAL LA MARSEILLAISE – Yves and Zigle advance to the quarter-finals

Nine Malagasy boule players competed in the 65th Mondial La Marseillaise de Pétanque. Only the team of Zigle and Yves managed to reach the Top 8.

Final day. The first three stages of the final phase of the 65th edition of the Mondial La Marseillaise took place yesterday at Parc Borély in Marseille. Four triples composed entirely or partially by Malagasy players were in contention.

The Décines club team, represented by two Malagasy stars—Yves Sedrick Rakotoarisoa and precision shooting world champion Jean-François Daniel Rakotondrainibe, known as “Zigle,” bolstered by Franck Picq—continues its journey in the quarter-finals. Yves’s squad qualified for the quarter-finals by defeating the Toulon triplet, consisting of Rémy Galleau, Jason Giraud, and Dylan Dubois, with a score of 13-9 in yesterday evening’s round of 16.

The Décines trio had previously dominated Jean-Baptiste Tellene, Kevin Philipson, and Luc Laille of Monteaux 13-0 in the round of 32. Earlier in the day, Zigle and his teammates had outperformed Cléda Ludovic, Emmanuel Paradis, and Antonio Lipari in the round of 64.

The second team, from the La Penne-Huveaune club, formed by three residents—Thierry Bezandry (known as “Masaka”), Lahatra Andriamanantany, and Stéphane Randrianarizafy—was eliminated in the round of 32. Bezandry and his teammates lost to the Thonon-les-Bains team. At the start of the final phase, this expatriate trio had eliminated the Barjac triplet.

The UBMT club team, composed of vice-world champion Faratiana Rakotoniaina (known as “Tiana Kely”), Donald Andrianantenaina, and Onja Lalaina Randrianarimanana, was knocked out in the round of 64, defeated 11-13 by the Marseille triplet. Another expatriate, Jimmy Rakotoariniaina of the Boule Aixoise club, alongside Gino Dollys and Samuel Lamare, also failed in the round of 64. These players from the “Great Island” had cruised through the six qualifying rounds on Sunday and Monday. Part of the quarter-finals and the semi-finals will take place this morning, with the final scheduled for late afternoon.
