OPEN MUSEUM – Joël Andrianomearisoa Unveils “Musée des Promesses”

In the heart of the Ankadimbahoaka industrial free zone, Joël Andrianomearisoa invites the public to rethink the traditional concept of a museum. With “Musée des Promesses” (Museum of Promises), the Malagasy artist has created a work that straddles the line between sculpture and architecture, transcending the conventional exhibition format to question the role of museums in a developing country.

First unveiled in Cotonou, Benin, in 2024 as part of the “Promesses” exhibition celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Zinsou Foundation, this installation has now arrived in Madagascar. “Musée des Promesses” is part of a series of four museums conceptualized by Joël Andrianomearisoa. Its uniqueness lies in its entirely open architecture: it features no doors, no prescribed path, and no enclosed spaces. Visitors roam freely, constructing their own experiences far from the rigid codes of traditional museums.

Through this creation, Joël Andrianomearisoa does not seek to provide answers but to spark reflection. What can a museum be in our latitudes? How can we imagine a cultural institution that is in sync with its territory and its realities? These are the questions raised by this work, conceived as a space for dialogue and sharing.

Designed as a multidisciplinary structure, “Musée des Promesses” can host various forms of artistic creation. Its modular nature allows it to evolve, adapt to diverse projects, and become a living space open to multiple artistic practices.

The installation also claims a direct relationship with its environment. Exposed to light, heat, and climatic variations, it stands in stark contrast to the “White Cube” model—a closed and controlled exhibition space. The work asserts that a museum can be born from its context, engage in a dialogue with its territory, and reflect the aspirations of society.

Open to all interpretations, “Musée des Promesses” places the public at the heart of the experience. Each visitor is free to take ownership of the space and offer their own reading, making this creation a monument dedicated to promises, dreams, and potential futures.
