MAHAJANGA – A man assaults his eleven-month-old niece

A man has abused his 11-month-old niece. The alleged perpetrator was brought before the public prosecutor last Thursday.

Reports of sexual violence against minors are on the rise in Mahajanga. Recently, a 35-year-old individual abused his 11-month-old niece in the Betania fokontany, located in the rural commune of Ankazomborona, Marovoay district. The suspect was brought before the prosecutor last Thursday and is currently in pre-trial detention at Marofoto pending judicial proceedings.

“During a family gathering, the uncle asked to take the little girl out under the pretext of buying biscuits. They did not return until two hours later. Upon their return, relatives noticed the child’s face was swollen and she was extremely weak. Furthermore, she was no longer wearing her underwear. When her mother tried to change her, she discovered severe injuries on the child’s private parts. The victim was immediately rushed to the local health center,” a relative recounted. A medical examination revealed severe genital injuries and traces of foreign substances in her mouth.

Disturbingly, the alleged rapist attempted to settle the matter with the family by offering them 20,000 ariary. The family refused and decided to file a complaint. The suspect then attempted to flee but was apprehended by police officers.

Last year, a 9-year-old girl living in Mahajanga was raped by her father for three years. Due to a domestic dispute, the mother left her three children with her husband and moved to Mahajamba in 2023. The father took advantage of his wife’s absence to abuse the young girl.

Generally, child supervision and education are neglected in Mahajanga. The absence of a parent, particularly the mother, along with family separation, facilitates these incidents. “Authorities and child rights officials should find sustainable and effective solutions to halt these offenses and sexual violence against children. Severe penalties should be enforced,” a mother of a victim stated.

Rape is recognized globally as a grave and heinous crime. Criminal laws worldwide provide for severe sanctions to punish offenders. In Madagascar, authorities are struggling to implement exemplary and strict sanctions to protect children.
