Colonel Michaël Randrianirina’s motorcade was followed by two drones yesterday evening in Ivandry. According to the presidency, an investigation has been opened following this threat against the president of the Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar (PRRM).
Colonel Michaël Randrianirina was directly threatened yesterday evening in Ivandry. Two drones followed his motorcade around 6:30 PM, near the ‘La City’ roundabout, as he was passing through the neighborhood. Witnesses reported hearing loud detonations and saw traffic abruptly interrupted by the police.
‘The police told us there was an attempted shooting against the president,’ said a bus passenger. ‘The vehicle stopped suddenly, we saw a bullet fly by, and we started praying, terrified,’ she described. ‘We heard people saying they wanted to block the president from passing,’ added a passerby, still in shock after seeing law enforcement fire into the air to secure the area before pursuing a suspicious bus.
In an official statement, the presidency confirmed that two drones did indeed follow Colonel Randrianirina’s vehicle in the ‘La City’ sector. Bodyguards spotted the devices, but they were operating at a high altitude and were able to move away quickly.
The presidential motorcade continued its route without further incident, and only one drone was sighted at a distance. The president arrived home safe and sound, where security measures have been reinforced. Authorities have announced the opening of an investigation to determine the origin of this attempt and to identify those responsible for what is being qualified as a serious threat to national security.
