The UN Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) has launched the ‘Peace Caravan’ in Morondava, marking ten years of commitment to social cohesion in Madagascar. The caravan will travel across various regions to promote dialogue, peace, and good governance.
Morondava hosted the launch of the first Peace Caravan in Madagascar, celebrating a decade of PBF efforts in conflict prevention, human rights promotion, and social cohesion. The caravan is set to traverse regions where the fund operates, encouraging dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, and effective governance.
The Menabe region was selected as the starting point due to its active youth organizations and achievements in gender equality and women’s empowerment. The launch featured an intergenerational dialogue, the inauguration of a mural titled ‘Your vision of peace for Menabe’, a ‘Karavan’alina’ (night caravan event), and a peace concert.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Alain Désiré Rasambany, who attended the ceremony, emphasized the need for continued support for the youth. ‘Young people are not just the future; they are the present,’ he stated.
Marie Doucey, coordinator of the PBF Technical Secretariat in Madagascar, noted that youth engagement remains a strategic priority. With young people making up nearly 70% of the Malagasy population, the PBF continues to support youth networks and the implementation of the Youth, Peace, and Security agenda.
In Morondava, the National Coalition for Youth, Peace, and Security held awareness-raising activities at the Youth Center, while the HCDH and ONDH organized dialogues between local authorities and young leaders. The PBF also highlighted the REAP project, where women’s committees in the Antimena protected area have successfully reduced tensions over natural resources while fostering community solidarity.
