The bioenergy sector is set to expand. Stakeholders in this industry will receive financial support to promote its development. “The National Assembly has already approved an envelope of approximately 35 million dollars intended to support all actors and producers of biogas, biochar, pellets, and bioethanol. If we haven’t been able to make progress until now, it is mainly due to a lack of funding,” stated Kenny Marco Louis Fidiarison, Director of Bioenergy and Clean Cooking at the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons.
This statement was made yesterday during the official launch of Madagascar’s Clean Cooking Development Policy Letter by the government, through the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons (MEH), with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and its partners.
“History shows that major transitions always begin with a shared vision. Today, Madagascar is promoting this vision through its National Clean Cooking Development Policy. Our collective responsibility is now to translate this vision into concrete results: better-protected households, preserved forests, developing businesses, and created jobs,” asserted Mr. Jean-François Dubuisson, Deputy Resident Representative of the UNDP in Madagascar.
As part of this policy letter, filling stations will be established. “Madagascar currently lacks gas cylinders and storage capacities. The funds we have secured, which are already included in this policy, will be used precisely to deploy all of these infrastructures,” the director clarified.
The goal is to reach a 50% penetration rate by 2030, compared to the current 14%. The search for funding is actively continuing to promote clean cooking across the country. According to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, nearly 200,000 hectares of forest disappear each year due to the pressure exerted on forest resources, particularly by the consumption of fuelwood.
