Hakanto Contemporary is hosting an unprecedented retrospective dedicated to Pierrot Men, bringing together four hundred works, archives, unpublished paintings, and photographic creations that trace fifty years of artistic journey.
Behind every photograph by Pierrot Men lies a story, an encounter, and a perspective shaped by time. With “Fofon’aina” (Breath of Life), Hakanto Contemporary opens a vast retrospective dedicated to one of the major figures of Malagasy photography. Presented from July 4, 2026, to February 14, 2027, this exhibition gathers nearly 400 works, personal archives, unpublished paintings, installations, and video creations, offering a unique reading of fifty years of artistic creation.
Conceived by Joël Andrianomearisoa and Rina Ralay Ranaivo, the exhibition goes beyond a simple photographic retrospective.
“There has never been an exhibition built on the history of his journey. Everyone must take responsibility for this duty of memory,” emphasizes Rina Ralay Ranaivo. According to him, Pierrot Men remains a unique artist whose career also tells a part of the cultural history of Madagascar.
The exhibition is structured around several spaces. The first traces the major stages of the artist’s career through his awards, exhibition posters, catalogs, books, official letters, iconic photographs, and original prints, while recalling the cultural environment that shaped his work.
A second part unveils, for the first time to the public, the paintings created between 1979 and 2012, a period when Pierrot Men was still exploring drawing and painting. The space also recreates his creative studio and presents his painting equipment as well as works and portraits created by his artist friends, notably Noël Razafintsalama and Sam.
The third space immerses visitors in the artist’s intimacy. Family albums, trophies, personal items, and photographs reveal the man behind the photographer and recount the moments that built his identity.
The exhibition continues with a selection of unpublished works curated by Joël Andrianomearisoa, offering a more sensitive reading of his work. Distributed into twelve thematic facets, the photographs explore topics such as “In the Solitude of an Eternal Horizon,” “In the Geometry of a Monument,” “Men at Work,” “Power and Counter-power,” “The Beautiful Consumer Society,” and “RN7, the Round Trip.” Silent landscapes, social scenes, abstractions, emotions, and symbols testify to this singular gaze inherited from his past as a painter. Two video projections conclude the journey, opening a conversation between Pierrot Men and future generations.
Before becoming a photographer, Pierrot Men dreamed of painting. Born in Midongy-du-Sud and settled in Fianarantsoa, he discovered his talent at the age of 15 by observing a painter’s canvases. Self-taught, in a city without an art school, he learned on his own through experience and trial and error. “I painted first. To paint, I needed a camera to create my drawings from contact sheets. That’s how my first images were born,” he recounts.
The true turning point came thanks to a friend. “She told me: ‘Why do you continue to paint when your photographs are worth much more than your paintings?’ I then picked up my camera with the eye of a photographer, not a painter. Since that day, I have never returned to painting. An encounter can make you choose another path,” confides Pierrot Men.
The artist does not forget the difficulties of his beginnings. “It wasn’t easy to make a living from photography, but when you love this profession, you continue,” he asserts. Reflecting on the evolution of his work, he also points out the transformations in photography: “Technology has evolved tremendously. Today, digital technology makes shooting easier, but, just like with film in the past, images still require real processing work.”
This celebration of his fifty-year career will continue in September with the presentation of a book dedicated to his work. More than a retrospective, “Fofon’aina” invites the public to traverse the world of an artist who has never ceased to transform daily life into visual memory.
