NAVIGATION – A suspicious ship heading towards Mauritius

A false alarm. The ship, which had been flagged as ‘suspicious’ by Malagasy authorities since Saturday, has been cleared of suspicion. The cargo ship ‘LS SUCESS’ was initially reported for allegedly deviating from its course or operating illegally within Madagascar’s Exclusive Economic Zone. Mozambican authorities indicated that the vessel was destined for Guinea-Conakry, yet it was detected late Saturday night approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Androka, in the Atsimo Andrefana region.

On Sunday, the vessel went radio silent, raising concerns among local authorities. As the ship is transporting livestock—reportedly around 500 live zebu—officials feared a potential animal disease outbreak should the vessel make landfall in Madagascar. According to ‘Marine Traffic’, a real-time global ship tracking application, the cargo ship is currently heading towards Mauritius. The ship reactivated its radar on Monday and continued to do so yesterday.

As of 8 p.m. last night, ‘Marine Traffic’ indicated that the ship had transmitted its position four hours earlier. The vessel is indeed heading toward Port-Louis, Mauritius, with a scheduled arrival date of July 7th.
