A macabre scene was discovered on Monday in Ambato, within the Ambohidratrimo district. Five graves were broken into over the course of a single night, showing clear signs of desecration.
According to initial findings, two tombs were completely emptied of their remains, as the perpetrators made off with the long bones of the deceased. A third vault, recently used for a burial barely a month ago, prevented the intruders from removing the body due to the lingering odor. Two other roadside graves were damaged but were not opened.
Residents believe the incident occurred two days ago, as the soil around the vaults was already dry. Passersby discovered the ransacked tombs and immediately alerted the affected families and local authorities. The Ambato gendarmes have since launched an investigation and implemented security measures.
The municipality of Ambato has announced close cooperation with law enforcement. Local officials stated they are taking full responsibility for addressing this matter.
