ROAMING – SEASIDE – Homeless children occupy leisure area

Since February, development work has been carried out at the Filao leisure area, located between the Central Bank and the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The site is managed by the Mahajanga urban commune. A 3×3 basketball court has been set up, and stalls for skewer vendors have also been refurbished.

Inflatable ball games, water-based inflatable games, and merry-go-rounds are also available on site. A surprise inspection was conducted this weekend by a team from the Mahajanga commune, consisting of the 2nd Vice-President of the Special Delegation of Mahajanga I, technicians, and the VPAN of Mahajanga.

The newly constructed basketball court has suffered damage and has been turned into a makeshift urinal and toilet. Homeless children have soiled the infrastructure, even though no activities have been organized there yet. Furthermore, these individuals have squatted in the inflatable structures, including slides and merry-go-rounds, where they sleep at night.

The darkness, caused by the lack of lighting in this area, exacerbates the situation. Insecurity around the seaside is frequent due to this lack of lighting and, above all, the absence of electricity in this sector. “The Mahajanga commune will take measures and enforce the law to protect common assets and public order. Residents are invited to remain calm and trust the sustainable solutions proposed by the authorities,” declared the municipal official.

The seaside coastline is one of the tourist sites frequently visited during this holiday period. The development of the vendors’ area for skewer sellers is currently underway.
