MINI-BASKET – Young basketball players celebrate the National Jamboree

Since June 29, the Ankatso grounds have been hosting the major annual celebration of Malagasy mini-basket. Organized by the Malagasy Basketball Federation (FMBB), the National Jamboree brings together nearly 1,300 young male and female basketball players from the U10 and U12 categories, representing all regional leagues, until July 5. In total, ninety-nine U12 teams and sixty U10 teams are participating in this unmissable event for the youngest enthusiasts of the orange ball.

In a friendly atmosphere filled with laughter and cheers, the children experienced their first matches ahead of the official opening ceremony held this afternoon at the Mahamasina Sports Palace, marked by the traditional parade of delegations under the theme of fraternity and personal development.

“The National Mini-Basket Jamboree is not a competition. It is a gathering intended to let children who love basketball play. This year, we are returning more to the philosophy of mini-basket: there are no final phases or trophies to distribute. The objective is to offer maximum playing time to all teams,” explains Onja Soloharinivo, president of the mini-basket commission.

Unlike a classic championship, the Jamboree does not designate any winner. The philosophy of mini-basket is prioritized so that every child can play, learn, and progress without the pressure of results.

Beyond the sports matches, the FMBB is taking advantage of this week to strengthen the training of coaches from all regions and to raise awareness among young players about essential topics. Workshops specifically address the proper behavior of a future high-level athlete, respect for opponents, discipline, and the risks associated with the misuse of social media.

The federation also reiterates its commitment to all age categories. It remains the only national sports federation to organize a Madagascar championship ranging from the youngest to veterans. This Jamboree illustrates the desire to build the future of Malagasy basketball from a very young age. By prioritizing the joy of playing, sportsmanship, and education, the FMBB intends to train responsible basketball players before even shaping future champions.
