Due to a resurgence of cases imported from Madagascar, health authorities in La Réunion are recommending that travelers heading to the ‘Great Island’ get vaccinated against Mpox before their departure.
Madagascar is among the areas where the Mpox virus is actively circulating. In this context, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of La Réunion is inviting individuals planning a stay on the island to anticipate the risks associated with this disease and take appropriate preventive measures. Specifically, they recommend vaccination before departure, particularly for those likely to have new sexual partners during their trip.
Since the beginning of 2026, La Réunion has recorded twenty cases of Mpox. According to health authorities, the majority of reported infections are linked to intimate contact that occurred during a recent stay in Madagascar. The virus is primarily transmitted through close contact, particularly during intimate or sexual encounters, even when condoms are used.
The ARS also reiterates the importance of preventive measures during the stay: wash hands regularly, avoid close contact with anyone exhibiting a skin rash suggestive of the disease, and do not handle items that may have been contaminated, such as clothing or household linens.
Vigilance
Upon returning from a trip, health authorities call for vigilance. They recommend consulting a doctor or contacting the SAMU (dial 15) if symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, skin rashes, or ulcerations appear.
To limit the spread of the virus, infected individuals must isolate themselves until their lesions have completely healed, the ARS reminds. Wearing a mask is recommended when in the presence of others, and gloves should be worn if the hands are affected. People who have been in contact with an infected person are advised to get vaccinated within four days of exposure, and no later than fourteen days after.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report on the epidemiological situation of Mpox worldwide as of May 31, 2026, and in Africa as of June 14, 2026, published on June 26, Madagascar is listed among the countries most affected by the disease.
