ANKORONDRANO ANDREFANA – A family struck by fire on the eve of the holiday

A house fell prey to flames on the eve of Independence Day in Ankorondrano Andrefana. The origin of the fire remains undetermined.

Fidelicia, a mother and owner of a small eatery in Ankorondrano Andrefana, was preparing for what she hoped would be a prosperous day. On June 25, the eve of Independence Day, she was counting on the influx of customers to generate good sales. However, while she was still serving in her small restaurant, an alert was raised: her home, located in the heart of the neighborhood, was burning.

Without thinking, she left her customers and rushed toward her home. The customers remaining in the eatery took the initiative to close the restaurant and tidy up in her absence. Meanwhile, she ran toward her house with a racing heart, hoping to save something. But the flames had already reached the upper floor. Two bedrooms and a gallery were engulfed by the fire.

Alerted at 6:58 PM, firefighters arrived at 7:03 PM. They managed to bring the blaze under control by 7:12 PM, before extinguishing it completely at 7:31 PM.

Local residents, mobilized from the first few minutes, had drawn water from the canal to try to contain the fire. A local official from the fokontany, who witnessed the scene, said he saw the blaze from the other side of the street. ‘The fire was impressive. The neighbors joined together to fight it, but almost all the belongings were destroyed,’ he said, still affected by the events.

The owner lists with a broken voice what was lost: one million ariary in cash, clothes, notebooks, a television, and a refrigerator. One of her children, who is preparing for the BEPC exam, saw all his notebooks and school supplies go up in smoke. He is now forced to study at friends’ houses.

The family, now homeless, has taken refuge with relatives. ‘Fortunately, no child was at home at the time of the incident,’ sighs Fidelicia, still shaken.

Jirama (the national utility company) and the police went to the site to examine possible causes of the fire. The electric meter did not explode, which rules out the hypothesis of a short circuit. The origin of the fire remains unknown.
