In Andavamamba, a doctor saw his savings—including the salary he had just received—go up in smoke during a fire that ravaged his room between Monday and Tuesday night.
A fire that occurred overnight from Monday to Tuesday in Andavamamba, near the Jirama agency, destroyed a doctor’s room, consuming his savings and most of his personal belongings.
Maholisoa Andriamanalina, a doctor at a basic health center, stated that he lost all the cash he kept at home, including his salary received just a few days earlier. A total of 1.6 million ariary was destroyed by the flames, along with 100,000 ariary belonging to the health facility where he works. “Everything disappeared in a few moments,” he confided.
At the time of the incident, the practitioner was sleeping alone on the ground floor while family members were upstairs. “I had taken medication to sleep, so I heard nothing. When I woke up, the room was already filled with smoke and flames,” he recounted. According to his account, a power outage followed by a sudden surge in electricity upon restoration may have caused the disaster, after a charger left plugged in caught fire.
Presumed Cause
“The fire was already very significant by the time I woke up,” he explained.
The fire destroyed the room’s furniture, including the bed, table, wardrobe, and a wooden partition. A collection of vinyl records and playback equipment were also consumed. The secondary electricity meter located nearby was damaged, though the main connection remained untouched—a detail that still puzzles the owner.
Alerted to the scene, firefighters intervened, but the flames had already ravaged most of the room. “I was surprised that I managed to wake up despite the sleeping pill I had taken,” he continued.
The doctor noted that he only occupies this residence on weekends and public holidays, as his professional duties require him to live elsewhere the rest of the time. He was due to return to his post on Tuesday morning when the fire broke out.
He also claims to have faced similar incidents in the past. “Last year, a charger caught fire. And two weeks ago, my old television started to ignite,” he reported.
Beyond the material losses, this fire highlights the risks associated with faulty electrical installations and the use of aging appliances in homes.
