“Litera A” – Elie Ramanankavana Explores the Malagasy Memory

With “Litera A,” Elie Ramanankavana offers a sensitive reading of Madagascar’s political and social realities, blending chronicle, memoir, and literature.

Behind a simple letter lies a profound reflection on history and the future. Writer, poet, and cultural journalist Elie Ramanankavana has published “Litera A: Chronique de la syllabe de flamme” (Litera A: Chronicle of the Syllable of Flame), a new work published by Hakanto Édition, which examines Malagasy society through recent events and the symbolic power of the letter ‘A’.

The book gathers chronicles inspired by socio-political events that occurred in Madagascar between September 25 and October 11, 2025. Drawing from these events, the author analyzes the tensions, hopes, and transformations of a society in flux, while highlighting the collective memory and aspirations of the youth.

At the heart of the work, the letter “A” stands out as a powerful symbol. Present in numerous names and even in the word “Madagascar” itself, it embodies memory, resistance, and renewal. Through this literary choice, Elie Ramanankavana explores the links between past and future, continuity and rupture, while giving a poetic form to the cycles of history.

The author does not limit himself to a simple news chronicle. He blends analysis, literary writing, and historical reflection to demonstrate how political events influence society and nourish the collective imagination. The book thus sits at the intersection of essay, narrative, and poetry, in an approach where literature becomes a space for social questioning.
