COOPERATION – Japan supports the development of mineral resources

Madagascar will receive a Japanese grant of 300 million yen, approximately 8.6 billion ariary, to strengthen the exploration of its mineral resources. Formalized on November 3, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Anosy, this funding will provide the University of Itasy with scientific equipment. The goal is to better identify minerals present in the Malagasy subsoil and promote their local development to increase economic benefits for the country.

This grant is part of Japan’s 2026 Economic and Social Development Program. The ceremony featured the signing of two documents. Minister of Foreign Affairs Alice N’Diaye and Yamada Shigechika, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Japan in Madagascar, signed an exchange of notes formalizing this cooperation. Minister of Economy and Finance Dr. Herinjatovo Aimé Ramiarison and Kosuke Odawara, Resident Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), subsequently signed the grant agreement for the project.

The University of Itasy will receive an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and an X-ray diffractometer. These tools will allow for more precise analysis of mineral composition and support geological research. While Madagascar already exploits resources like ilmenite and chrome, a lack of technical means limits research on other strategic minerals such as graphite and beryllium.

“The exploration of these strategic resources relies essentially on reliable, precise, and scientifically validated geological information,” emphasized Yamada Shigechika. The project aims to enhance national expertise, enabling researchers and engineers to better assess mineral potential and foster local processing, moving beyond the mere export of raw materials.
