BEHORIRIKA – Merchants put up resistance

Tensions flared on Saturday during the demolition of commercial facilities around Lake Behoririka. Merchants opposed to the continuation of the work expressed their dissatisfaction. Groups of youths subsequently threw stones at the teams from the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA), forcing the officials and agents in charge of the demolition to leave the site.

This incident occurs as the Commune continues to clear the areas around the lake. Several remaining commercial installations are affected by the demolition operations, which are part of the lake rehabilitation project. This intervention is meeting resistance from some occupants who oppose the removal of structures installed on the site.

On the ground, the stone-throwing disrupted the progress of the work and led to the withdrawal of the municipal teams. This protest highlights the difficulties encountered in carrying out development operations around the lake, where commercial activities occupy part of the banks.

However, the CUA reaffirms its intention to continue the demolition of the remaining installations deemed illegal. It frames this approach within the context of the rehabilitation and improvement of Lake Behoririka. The stated objective is, in particular, to prevent the risk of rising water levels during the rainy season.

The continuation of the project remains confronted with protests on the ground. The reclamation of the lake’s surroundings constitutes a component of the municipal interventions, even as the demolition operations continue to spark opposition among some occupants.
