How the QMM mine is boosting the economic ecosystem of the Anôsy region and Madagascar

When we think of a mine, we often imagine an isolated industrial site extracting underground resources. However, in Fort-Dauphin, QMM’s mining activity demonstrates that the impact of such a project extends far beyond its operational boundaries. By structuring a global value chain, the company has become an essential engine for the development of the Anôsy region and the Malagasy economy.

The economic footprint of QMM begins with human capital. Industrial activity acts as a powerful social stabilizer and job accelerator in the territory. Beyond the teams operating directly on-site, a whole dynamic of subcontracting and services comes to life daily.

The entrepreneurial fabric of Fort-Dauphin has been deeply transformed and professionalized. Today, 88 local partner companies collaborate with the mine. Whether in transport, logistics, industrial maintenance, security, hospitality, or catering, these regional providers represent approximately 1,300 stable jobs. Through a cascading effect, the injected income circulates in local businesses, supporting thousands of families and creating a unique interconnected economic ecosystem in the South of the Great Island.

The long-term impact of a mining project is also measured by the material legacy it leaves to the territory. In Fort-Dauphin, infrastructure initially designed for the mine was intended for shared use, becoming true public goods for the community. The most iconic example is the Ehoala Port. Originally designed for mineral exports, it has transformed into a major regional maritime hub where 70% of traffic is now public, opening the Anôsy region to international trade. Regarding roads, QMM’s commitment of 8 million USD for the rehabilitation of the RN13 represents a decisive step for opening up the region and facilitating trade. Finally, the city’s energy transition is reaching a milestone thanks to infrastructure associated with the mine, now guaranteeing continuous access to electricity for nearly 80,000 residents of Fort-Dauphin.

In 2025, 80.88 million USD was injected by QMM into the national economy through its purchases of goods and services, of which 16.5 million USD was directly channeled to local structures in the Anôsy region. This investment is accompanied by a rigorous transfer of skills, allowing Malagasy SMEs to rise to international standards of quality and safety.
