EBOLA EPIDEMIC – Passengers arriving from Kenya placed under quarantine

Kenya is now among the countries subject to “special measures,” alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Public Health on Thursday. Consequently, passengers arriving from this country will be subject to quarantine upon their arrival in Madagascar.

“The measure will come into effect starting Monday,” a source from the Ministry of Public Health indicated yesterday. These provisions stem from interministerial note number 569, which concerns the strengthening of health measures at borders aimed at reducing the risk of introducing the Ebola virus into the country. Kenya has recorded cases of Ebola, while five to six flights per week connect this country directly to Madagascar. “A preparation period is granted to travelers until Sunday, as those already en route cannot change their travel plans,” the source added.

The duration of this quarantine is set at 21 days. The affected travelers will be accommodated in hotel establishments designated by the authorities. Accommodation and catering costs will be entirely at their own expense.

Last week, authorities were concerned about finding establishments capable of accommodating the 500 to 600 people arriving in Madagascar from Kenya or who have transited through it. The Ministry of Public Health urges travelers to limit, as much as possible, their travel and transit in the affected countries. The goal is to avoid this quarantine, but above all, not to contract the disease or import it.

To date, no cases of Ebola have been recorded in Madagascar, according to a source from the Ministry of Public Health yesterday. Two suspected cases were reported, but test results proved negative. “All passengers from affected countries are under surveillance. Any slight rise in temperature is subject to investigation,” the same source assured.
