The strengthening of economic relations between Madagascar and Turkey is opening up new prospects for investment, employment, and the development of local businesses.
During the celebration of the 103rd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey on October 29 in Antananarivo, authorities highlighted the potential for cooperation between the two nations. Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison, government members, and diplomatic representatives attended the reception hosted by the Turkish Embassy.
Ambassador Halime Ebru Demircan and Minister of Public Security, Éric Michel Wouli Soumah Idissa, emphasized the importance of boosting trade and investment. The Minister stated, “Development must serve the population and be based on a solid, respectful, and mutually beneficial partnership.” This approach aims to translate diplomatic ties into concrete achievements, particularly in growth-oriented sectors, with energy already serving as a key pillar.
The thermal power plant operated by the Turkish company Aksa, inaugurated in November 2017, represents an investment of over 80 million US dollars. In June 2026, the State took over the plant, while an operation and maintenance contract was signed with an Aksa subsidiary to ensure continuous power supply to the capital. Beyond energy, sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, renewable energy, industry, local processing, tourism, and health offer significant investment opportunities, which could foster job creation and support Malagasy enterprises.
For the local population, the impact of these investments is a tangible issue. The establishment of industries and the processing of local products can create opportunities for producers, suppliers, and workers. Furthermore, tourism development can generate income for local stakeholders and small businesses.
Cooperation also extends to education. Since 1992, 181 young Malagasy students have pursued higher education in Turkish universities through scholarship programs. This mobility contributes to skill development, a crucial factor for supporting the country’s economic growth. Several agreements are currently under negotiation in the fields of fisheries, education, electricity, mining, and investment promotion. The government also aims to improve the legal framework to enhance investor security. The challenge now lies in turning these prospects into reality.
