At just 25 years old, Kevin Mihangy Lahimasy is a public works and construction entrepreneur. He shares his journey and encourages young people to start with what they have.
Can you introduce yourself?
I am Kevin Mihangy Lahimasy, 25 years old. I was born in Toliara and live in the Betania neighborhood. I studied Audit and Finance at ISCAM in Antananarivo. Afterward, I secured internships and employment at a bank. However, as I progressed, I realized I needed to do something for myself rather than working for others.
How did the transition to becoming a construction entrepreneur happen?
I told myself that I wouldn’t reach my goals if I remained an employee. The transition was born from meetings within circles of friends and professional networks. One day, discussions turned to the construction sector, and I became interested. After a few days of reflection, I took the plunge.
But you didn’t study that field?
Yes, indeed. But I was advised to work with engineers and specialists. I then set up my construction company with an engineer, an accountant, two master masons, and myself, who actively researches the market. It has barely been two years, but I can say that I am securing significant contracts. I have also opened another new car rental company.
Did you have specific funds to start and operate your businesses?
I wouldn’t say I didn’t have any, but I wasn’t financed by anyone. I started with two million Ariary. As my contracts grew, I requested credit lines from banks. I then reinvested in refurbishments and the purchase of new cars for the rental company. I am currently setting up an agricultural services and local product purchasing company.
How do you think the youth of Toliara can succeed like you?
I’m sorry to say it, but young people sometimes behave like sheep. They are always waiting for someone to guide them or lead them to their destination and goals. But they must not wait to be given everything before starting an entrepreneurial project. They should not wait for anyone and should rely only on themselves.
In which field would you encourage young people to start in order to contribute to the development of the Atsimo Andrefana region?
Without hesitation, I advise them to go into agribusiness. We have everything here, and the food sector is always a promising one. Opt for local products! Also, don’t forget to think about social accountability. With our association ‘Anaky Toliara Miharo,’ we try to help our compatriots through donations to hospitals and schools, among other things.
