AIDS – Lack of awareness about the virus fuels risks

With 150,000 people living with HIV in Madagascar, the forum held on October 27 placed information and testing at the heart of prevention.

Knowing one’s serological status remains essential in the fight against HIV in Madagascar. In 2026, the number of people living with the virus in the country is estimated at 150,000, according to data presented during the HIV forum organized on October 27 at the Radisson Blu. Approximately 50 new cases are reported each day, and one death is recorded daily. These figures highlight the need to strengthen awareness and access to testing to limit new infections.

The lack of knowledge about HIV and prevention methods was among the concerns raised during the meeting. Some people remain insufficiently informed about transmission modes and protection methods. This lack of information affects various segments of the population, particularly the youth, and can encourage risky behaviors.

For Professor Lanto Niriana Ravaoarisoa, Director General of the National Institute of Public and Community Health at the Ministry of Health, information must occupy a central place in the fight against HIV. Awareness campaigns must go beyond general messages to enable everyone to understand the risks, know prevention methods, and make informed choices.

Testing is another essential component. The national positivity rate presented for September 2026 stands at 2.37%. Knowing one’s serological status is indispensable, as an infection can go unnoticed. Testing allows for early detection and directs those concerned toward appropriate care.

The ABCD approach was also presented as a means of prevention: Abstinence, Being faithful to one partner, Condom use, and Detection (testing). These messages must be explained in an accessible way to both young people and adults. The goal is to integrate prevention into daily practices through regular awareness, beyond sporadic campaigns.

The forum is expected to result in a roadmap to guide future actions, particularly regarding awareness. Exchanges between stakeholders should translate into initiatives adapted to local realities. Beyond national figures, the goal is to better inform the population, encourage testing, and facilitate access to prevention tools.
